2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

This is an original one-sheet poster from 1970 for the continuous, initial theatrical release of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The science fiction classic stars Gary Lockwood, Keir Dullea, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter, Leonard Rossiter, Robert Beatty and Douglas Rain. Stanley Kubrick directed the film.

The film had an initial, roadshow release that began in 1968 which led to a wider, 35mm theatrical release in 1969. The studio launched a 70mm theatrical release in March 1970 as part of this initial release and this poster is from that campaign. The same, star child poster art was subsequently used for the 1972 and 1974 theatrical re-releases of the film.

The style D poster measures 27” x 41” and has been linen-backed for long-term preservation and display. Prior to restoration, the poster was in good condition with moderate fold and edge wear. It was folded at the time of printing but the folds are much less noticeable after linen-backing. Linen-backed posters are stored flat and rolled for shipping in a rigid, tube mailer.
