Clockwork Orange (1972)

This is an original, linen-backed, one-sheet movie poster from 1972 for the X-rated, theatrical release of A Clockwork Orange starring Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Adrienne Corri, Miriam Karlin, Warren Clarke, and James Marcus. Stanley Kubrick directed the classic science fiction drama based on the novel by Anthony Burgess. Philip Castle is the artist for the poster.

A Clockwork Orange was originally released in the United States in early 1972 with an X rating however most theaters refused to screen X-rated films. Director Stanley Kubrick adjusted 30 seconds of the film and resubmitted the film to the MPAA. In August, the MPAA changed the rating to R and new posters were printed for this expanded release. This poster is from the very limited, initial X rated release.

The poster measures 27” x 41” and has been linen-backed for long-term preservation and display. Prior to restoration, the poster was in very good condition with spunholes in the corners from theatrical display and some residue left from a sticker that had been used to cover the X-rating.  It was folded at the time of printing but the fold lines are greatly reduced after restoration.  The poster is now in excellent, restored condition.
