This is an original, unfolded, Style B half-sheet movie poster from 1953 for the initial, theatrical release of The War of the Worlds starring Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne, Robert Cornthwaite, Lewis Martin, and Ann Codee. Byron Haskin directed the classic science fiction film based on the novel by H.G. Wells.
Most posters for the initial ad campaign of War of the Worlds featured a giant alien hand but not the trademark, alien spacecraft that are synonymous with the film. This scarce, Style B poster features vibrant images of the ships and is one of the rarest, and most prized, film posters ever produced.
The poster measures 22” x 28” and is in very good condition. It has never been folded and has been restored through gel-backing. Gel-backing is a type of poster restoration where a gel material is applied to the back of the poster allowing for any needed repairs. Once restoration is complete, the gel backing is carefully removed leaving only the original, restored poster without any additional backing.
Prior to restoration, the poster was already in very good condition with pinholes in the top and bottom white edges with some tiny paper loss from rough removal. There were two small tears in the upper-white edge and a single pinhole in the bottom-center of the image (above the word Directed). Otherwise, the main image was (and remains) in excellent condition prior to restoration. The outer edges of the white border have somewhat darkened from being stored in a frame for many years.
This incredibly rare and collectible poster, printed in 1953 to promote the initial theatrical release of The War of the Worlds, is not a reproduction or a reprint.
