This is an original, linen-backed, British quad movie poster from 1962 for the initial, theatrical release of Porgy and Bess starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Bailey and Brock Peters. Otto Preminger directed the classic George Gershwin musical.
Like a handful of classic films from the 1950s and 1960s, Porgy and Bess was produced in 70mm Todd-AO allowing projection on very large, curved screens in select theaters. Porgy and Bess was released in London in 1962 and was featured on a Todd-AO screen at the 2,163 seat Dominion theater in London and later at the nearby (and smaller) Columbia theater. Most other movie theaters in the United Kindgom didn't have the equipment to project in 70mm Todd-AO so they showed non-70mm prints of the film.
The British quad poster for the film was designed and printed with credits for Todd-AO in the top left and bottom left of the poster. This information was professionally overprinted sometime before theatrical display for unknown reasons. This black overprinting is on every currently known, surviving British quad poster for the film.
The poster measures 30" x 40" and has been linen-backed for long-term preservation and display. The poster was in very good condition prior to restoration with minimal fold wear and tape residue in the corners from theatrical display. It had been folded at the time of printing but the folds are much less prominent after linen-backing.
Please look closely at the photos (this is the exact poster you are buying). It is not cropped or a stock image. The black circles in the corners of the poster are magnets and not pins.
This very rare and collectible poster, printed in 1962 to promote the British theatrical release of Porgy and Bess, is not a reproduction or a reprint.
